History of Portland
The History of Portland began on the Williamette River in 1843 in what used to be called Oregon Country. The name Portland was chosen in 1845 and in 1851 the city was incorporated. In the mid-1990's Portland saw a resurgence and what many consider a renaissance in the city's local art scene. This period saw a rapid rise in the number of independent galleries, artists as well as shows and public discourses about the arts. Publications were born and the city took to art more seriously. Clearly, it was during this time that the city has undergone a transformation into one that is rich in culture and the arts which translates to an international audience.
