Compared to other cities in the USA, New York is an expensive city. Being a hub of finance, arts, entertainment, history, fashion, food and shopping, it is not surprising that the average cost of living in New York is one of the highest in the world. The rent of a small room in downtown Manhattan can cost a minimum of $2,000 a month. The prices of the basic necessities such as groceries and clothing are also higher because of the higher sales tax in New York.
