History of Washington
Washington was named after George Washington in 1791 and in 1800, Congress held its first session in this city. One of the most notable historical events in Washington history was when British forces burned down Washington in 1814, including the Capitol, Treasury, and the White House. Other than this, Washington was the scene for many other events such as the riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the execution of the McMillan Plan in 1901.
