History of San Francisco
San Francisco became independent from Spain in 1821 and during the California Gold Rush, the city's population increased from 1,000 to 25,000. On April 18, 1906, San Francisco was struck by an earthquake, after which a major rebuilding of the city started and led to its rebirth in 1915. Having established itself as a financial capital in the years that followed, San Francisco survived the 1929 stock market crash with not a single bank experiencing a fall.
