History of Detroit
The history of Detroit can be traced back to the early 1600's when France began to establish forts at strategically chosen locations throughout North America to prevent the Brits from heading west out of New England as well as to start a cartel. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac felt that the place which was then known as Le Detroit or “The Straits” in English was the obvious choice for a major post. The river located in the area was constricted enough so that it will allow them to fire a cannon their side to other but wide enough to allow substantial defense. The France court agreed and so the Cadillac was permitted to start his settlement, which was located Detroit's River. This was in 1701.
