History of Barcelona
The first legend tells of how Barcelona is founded by Hercules 400 years before Rome was built. The Carthagininan Hamilcar Barca, who named the city Barcino in the 3rd century BC, rebuilt it. The other legend tells of a direct relation to Hamilcar Barca.
The Visigoths conquered the city in the 5th century followed by the Moors in the early 8th. It was then taken over by Charlemagne’s son, Louis in 801. He made Barcelona the seat of Carolingian Spanish Marches. The Counts of Barcelona became independent eventually and expanded their territory to Catalonia.
