History of Larnaca
The history of Larnaca, shows the rich culture of the city. It was founded by Phoenicians and was known as Kition, or Citium in Latin. This word was seldom used by the Jews for the Greeks and Romans. However, because it is an important port contributing much to the trading system of old Cyprus, it was named “Skala” meaning “ladder” or “landing stage”. In 450 BC, Cimon, the Athenian general died at a sea battle in defense of Citium from Persians.
