History of Jakarta
The museums houses artifacts that traces the history of Jakarta. It was a Dutch colony from the 1500’s until the end of world War II. Its old name was Sunda Kelapa. “Jakarta” was a name given by the Japanese during World War II. Jakarta is actually a province, and not a city, but its status as Indonesia’s capital is rather special. For the first time in 2007, Jakarta has elected its governor, contrary to the previous years when the Parliament appoints a governor.
